Rhinoplasty surgery can be performed in one of two ways: open technique rhinoplasty surgery and closed technique rhinoplasty surgery. Essentially, the difference lies in the types of incisions which are made to the nose. Both techniques involve incisions made to the inside of your nose, and only open technique rhinoplasty surgery involves an incision to the external part of your nose.

Closed Rhinoplasty Surgery

Closed rhinoplasty surgery involves tiny incisions which are made inside the nose. There are no incisions made to the outer skin of the nose which means that there is no external scarring visible after the operation. Although every procedure is different, typically closed rhinoplasty surgery will be performed when the following criteria are met:

• Tip of the nose has excellent shape and does not project out from the face too far or too little
• Nose does not have a drooping tip
• Nose is not too long or crooked
• There is little or no hump to be removed
• Surgical repair is minor and not too extensive

Open Rhinoplasty

The open rhinoplasty surgery involves tiny incisions inside the nose, but also performs one more incision to the columella (the column of skin separating the two nostrils). By making this extra incision in open rhinoplasty, the surgeon has the ability to open up the nose and to operate on the necessary parts while they are in their natural positions and fully visible.

Although incision is made to the outer surface of your nose, scaring should not be a problem. The tiny scar on the outer piece of skin heals very easily and a few weeks later you will barely be able to notice it at all.

Open rhinoplasty surgery is slightly more invasive than the closed technique and may involve a slightly different recovery period. Your rhinoplasty surgeon will give you the details of your specific procedure and what you can expect after your surgery.
